E-commerce policy framework to come out in six months: Rita Teaotia (Watch Video)

New Delhi, Apr 25 (KNN) After the first meeting of the Think-tank constituted to formulate the e-commerce policy in India, Commerce Secretary Rita Teaotia said the government intends to bring out an e-commerce policy framework in next six months in order to bring the booming sector under a policy umbrella.

After the discussions in the meeting attended by stakeholders from across the government departments, regulatory bodies and industry associations, Teaotia said it was decided in the meeting to constitute a taskforce.

She said the task-force will cross-examine the details of the inputs they have received during the first meeting of think-tank on the framework for the National Policy on E-Commerce.

During the meeting the areas of discussion were taxation, competition commission, localization etc.

Teaotia said, “The taskforce will come out with a set of recommendations which will be brought before the Think-tank in about five months from now and we expect the think tank to give its policy recommendations in six months’ time.”

It was decided that within the taskforce also specific groups shall be constituted for advising on different issues like digital infrastructure, issue of technology transfer, completion, Foreign Direct Investment etc.

The taskforce will be headed by the Commerce Secretary as well as some other key secretaries of the GOI.

On discussion at the World Trade Organization (WTO) on e-commerce, Teaotia said, “At the WTO, discussions over e-commerce is on and India is an active participant in it. As yet there is no negotiating mandate at WTO.As we flesh out our own policy, our position will become more informed and clear.” (KNN Bureau)
