Important to strengthen food processing industry in the country, current 10 pc involvement dissatisfactory: Harsimrat

New Delhi, Sept 8 (KNN) Expressing discontent over the lack of focus on the food processing sector in the country, Union Minister for Food Processing Industries, Harsimrat Kaur Badal said that the sector needs to be strengthened up further.

Talking to media, Harsimrat informed that most of the advanced countries have over 70-80 per cent of its involvement in the food processing sector, whereas at present in India the number is just 10 per cent which is not a satisfactory statistic considering the large agri base available in the country.

She further said that the government is highly focused on exploring the potential of the sector and bringing up the engagement.

Listing the measures taken by her Ministry, Harsimrat said that the government is offering subsidy from 1 lakh rupees to 10 crore rupees for assisting interested farmers at different stages of establishing their processing units.

The Minister further said the SAMPADA scheme rolled out by the government is in line with the ambition of boosting the sector. With a corpus over 6000 crores by the government, the sector is likely to attract and multiply investments of over 31,000 crores in the coming years enabling the farmers not only to produce as farmers but also as processors.

Under the scheme an estimated 20 lakh farmers are to benefit. Also creation of over 5 lakh direct and indirect jobs is expected, the Minister added. (KNN/ DA)

Yes it is true that we should emphasise more on the productivity level of food we produced, as India is a developing nation so many new techniques and ideas should be implemented to increase food processing industry
