Govt. committed to providing world class transport and logistics infrastructure: Nitin Gadkari

New Delhi, Nov 6 (KNN) Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister of Road Transport & Highways, Shipping, Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation assured the stakeholders of the food industry that government would provide them world class  logistics and transport infrastructure while addressing a session on Opportunity in Infrastructure, Logistics Technology and Equipment in the World Food India 2017.

He said that the national highways had expanded from 96000 Km to 1.7 lakh Km and would soon reach a length of 2 lakh km which would ensure frictionless movement of farm produce from remote areas to food processing centers and to markets.

Speaking on the government’s initiatives to promote seamless logistics and movement of goods he said that government has planned to build 44 Economic Corridors and 24 Multi Modal Logistics Parks as a part of Bharatmala Programme and work has already been begun for setting up Logistics Parks at Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Vijaywada, Surat and Guwahati.

14 Coastal Economic Zones and two mega food processing parks had also been planned at Kakinada and Satara under the Sagarmala Programme of the shipping industry and support had already been given to fishermen under the programme to develop their skills and raise their productivity. 

He informed that 111 waterways are being developed as National Waterways. River Ganga, Brahmaputra, Barak are already under development. Water transport would reduce logistics costs, which in turn will benefit the food processing industry.

He further said that the government had also been considering developing micro or drip irrigation in the water deficient regions of the country which would tremendously help agriculture and food industry. (KNN/AG)
