Of 106.41 crores current/saving accounts, 82.47 crore accounts linked with aadhaar: Govt data

New Delhi, Dec 30 (KNN) Of the 106.41 crore Current Account and Savings Account (CASA) in the country over 82.47 crore accounts are linked with Aadhaar number, data from Finance Ministry informed.

Shiv Pratap Shukla, Minister of State for Finance in written reply to a question in Lok Sabha further informed that out of 30.76 crore Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) accounts 22.58 crore PMJDY accounts have been seeded with Aadhaar number, as on 20.12.2017.

Commenting over the intent of the government towards mandating Aadhar, the Minister said linking of Aadhaar in bank accounts, Jan Dhan, enables the different Ministries and Departments under Centre and State governments to transfer subsidy directly into the bank account of the beneficiaries using the Aadhaar Payment Bridge.

The Minister however informed that beneficiaries not having Aadhaar number are also allowed direct benefit transfer into their bank accounts.

Citing numbers, Shukla said that the reports from different department indicate an estimated savings of 57,029 crore as on 31.3.2017, due to direct benefit transfer (DBT) under various schemes including Pratyaksh Hanstantrit Labh (PAHAL), Public distribution system, Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS), National Social Assistance Programme (NSAP) and other allied schemes.

This saving was possible due to the DBT framework as it helps eliminate the gap of ghost beneficiaries that existed prior to DBT, the Minister further said. (With PIB Inputs) (KNN/DA)
