GCCI to launch Dispute Resolution Centre to tackle trade disputes; MSMEs to benefit

New Delhi, Apr 26 (KNN) The Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) is set to launch the Arbitration, Mediation, Conciliation and Alternate Dispute Resolution Centre (GCCI-ADRC). The GCCI-ADRC is based on a model that could help facilitate easier and hassle-free redressal of disputes, especially to the MSMEs.

Talking to KNN, Shailesh Patwari, Sr. Vice President of GCCI said that there are over 5 Lakh MSME units in the region, the dispute cases with which MSMEs approach court for litigation are of smaller value, and the parties end up incurring huge costs to get the dispute settled. In such a scenario an Arbitration Center in proximity will help the MSMEs settle cases in much more easier way.

“The main intention of setting up the GCCI-ADRC is to buy time and save costs. To get a dispute solved, the units will save up to 80 per cent on every case. Also we plan the maximum time frame for a dispute to conclude to be not more than a year” said Patwari.

At present there are over 1000 cases pending in the court, the GCCI-ADRC aims to address at least 700-800 cases every year

He further added that the resolution model for faster mechanism, will involve pair of judges, one for the technical needs and the other one for the legal needs. For instance in case a Chemical industry approaches the ADRC, the Centre plans to have a judge who is an expert in the chemical industry and the other one being the legal expert, this will help expedite the mechanism.

Patwari also emphasized the importance of PM’s Digital India project and said that the GCCI-ADRC will have well connected video conferencing facilities; this will help attract traffic that goes to the International Arbitration Centres in Singapore.

“The Centre will be inaugurated formally later this week and will be in full function by May 2017”added the VP
