MoS Defence reiterates importance of private org-MSMEs in defence mfg.; MSMEs say air of confusion

New Delhi, Dec 12 (KNN) The engagement of private organizations including the Micro, Small and medium Enterprises in the design and development of products in the aerospace is an impressive indicator. Further engagement and contribution from these players must continue, Dr. Subhash Bhamre, Minister of State for Defence said recently.

While the government hinted towards keen engagement with the private players as well as the micro, small and medium enterprises, the MSMEs say that there is an air of confusion over the claims.

Talking to KNN, Piyush Pandey, Public Relation Manager of Defense and Strategic Industries Association of India (DISA) said that not much is clear for the MSMEs as to how should they go about in the sector.

On one hand the government seems to engage with more private organizations and MSMEs, on the other hand there exists a monopoly of the big players in the sector.

Explaining the situation further, Pandey said that the startups that are willing to do business in defence manufacturing aren’t provided appropriate handholding and guidance from the department.

Citing a case of the member MSME, Pandey said that when the unit approached the authorities for collaborating to manufacture goods, the unit was turned away and said that the startups aren’t considered for that particular portfolio.

Pandey also informed that there are news reports surfacing that the different offices and workers are going to conduct a strike demanding the government to eliminate all private-MSME contracts for defence manufacturing. If true, how are the MSMEs in the sector being encouraged to continue, Pandey further raised.

Pandey made the remarks responding to comments made by MoS Defence Dr. Bhamre during a Public Private Partnership (PPP) Summit under Make-in-India at HAL in Nashik highlighting the importance of private organization-MSMEs engagement in the sector.

Also during the event, making an appeal, Bhamre said that the different stakeholders of the aerospace and defence manufacturing should work together and contribute to the overall ecosystem in the country. (KNN/DA)
