SMEs vital to country’s economic prosperity, govt committed to promote entrepreneurship: Vice Prez Naidu

New Delhi, Nov 30 (KNN) Voicing importance of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises in the country’s economic prosperity, Vice President Venkaiah Naidu said that the Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) have to be strengthened to play a bigger role in the country’s economic prosperity.

The Vice President made the following remarks addressing the 21st International Conference on Small and Medium Enterprises, titled “Achieving inclusive and sustainable industrialization by promoting SMEs” organized by the World Association for Small and Medium Enterprises (WASME).

Citing numbers, Naidu said said that the SMEs contribute over 45 per cent of India’s GDP and employs nearly 46 crore people, which is the second largest workforce in the country after the agricultural sector, and is growing at 11.5 per cent annually.

The Small and Medium Enterprises have big role to play in setting sustainable trends to safeguard the future generations, the President added.

Naidu also mentioned the recent jump made by India in World Bank’s Ease of doing business report and said that the government is working round the clock to ensure a more friendly ecosystem for promoting entrepreneurship as well as SME sector in the country.

Key officials present at the event included Union Minister for Commerce & Industry, Suresh Prabhu, the Minister of Industry, Government of Bangladesh, Amir Hossain Amu, Minister of Business, Enterprise and Co-operatives, Government of Mauritius, Soomilduth Bholah, the President of WASME, Alhaji Babale Umaru Girei.
