Centre to bring new industrial policy; looks for strong partnership with Tamil Nadu for implementing new initiative

New Delhi, June 22 (KNN) The Central government of India will soon bring new industrial policy for the country, which will be the third after the earlier ones unveiled in 1956 and 1992. Moreover, the centre is keen to secure support of big states like Tamil Nadu for strong centre-state partnership, said Union Minister for Commerce & Industry and Civil Aviation Suresh Prabhu.

He made the above remarks at the inauguration of ACMEE 2018, the 13th International Machine Tools Exhibition, organized by AIEMA (Ambattur Industrial Estate Manufacturers Association) on Thursday.

Speaking after inaugurating the ACMEE 2018, Prabhu said, “Tamil Nadu is known to deliver good infrastructure for industries. It is already developed and we will make it more developed through our partnership.”

Stressing on role of state in implementing new policy, Prabu said states become an important partner for implementing new initiatives and without their support, we cannot take them forward.

Further, he promised to address the state issues related to infrastructure and industry at the earliest, whenever brought to his notice.

Also, he observed that the Tamil Nadu government is very keen to promote industry as also the centre.

Pointing this, he said, “We need to build good infrastructure for industrial estates. But, land is becoming more and more an issue everywhere in the country.”

The commerce minister praised former Tamil Nadu chief minister K Kamaraj for his foresight in planning to establish an industrial estate in Ambattur way back in 1963.

Elaborating on the new industrial policy, the minister said, unlike policies in the past, which were driven by ideologies, the latest one is being designed for the growth of the industry.

“The focus is not only on creating new jobs in manufacturing, but also in developing the entire ecosystem,” he added.

Earlier, addressing the gathering, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O Pannerselvam made the statement that the Tamil Nadu has been in the forefront of industrialization in India, with a strong presence in the manufacturing sector.

He said that the state accounts for largest number of MSMEs in India and more than 15% of all MSMEs in the country are in Tamil Nadu and they provide employment to nearly one crore people.

The industrial policy of the state has been periodically reviewed and brought in line with emerging trends in technology and in economy.

“The thrust of the state’s ‘Vision 2023’ is increasing the share of manufacturing in Tamil Nadu’s economy and making SMEs vibrant,” he added.
