Chennai resident apprehended for creating fake MSME website; time for increased budget to tackle cyber crimes?

Hyderabad, Feb 27 (KNN) The growing incidents of cyber-crimes clearly indicates that there is a serious need for the government to increase spending on cyber security, especially when there is so much push for digitization.

Recently, a Chennai resident was apprehended for cheating people by creating a fake website for registering MSMEs.

The catch, however, for the experienced entrepreneurs was that the MSME Ministry does not charge for registering while the fake website did.

The cyber crime police on Tuesday apprehended Kulothunga Boopathy, a resident of Chennai, for cheating people by creating a fake government website msmerigister.com for registering micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME).

According to a media report, the cyber-crime police last week apprehended Kulothunga Boopathy, a resident of Chennai, for cheating people by creating a fake government website msmerigister.com for registering MSMEs.

A complaint was lodged by an MSME entrepreneur after she was asked to pay Rs 1,481. She paid up through her SBI credit card, but grew suspicious when she did not get any reply in 24 hours.

When she accessed the Udhyog Aadhaar website, she learnt that the MSME doesn't charges any fee for issuing registration certificate.

A joint study conducted by ASSOCHAM and Pricewaterhouse Coopers (PwC) on 'Recommendations - Cyber & network security’ stressed that the government should sharply increase spending on cyber security to a level that matches the changing threat landscape.

“The government should allocate adequate budget for cyber security related initiatives such as capacity building, training of the workforce, implementing awareness programmes, and promoting research and development,” according to the paper.

It also suggested the industry to make budgets to expand efforts to attract and retain qualified cyber professionals.
