Paper Mills suffering due to cheaper imports, govt must impose duty: IPMA

New Delhi, Aug 21 (KNN) The Paper Mills sector comprising of a fair share of the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in the country are having a tough time due to the rising import of cheaper paper from ASEAN countries, Indian Paper Manufacturer Association (IPMA) said.

Indian Paper Manufactures Association (IPMA) informed that the sector has not experienced any substantial expansion in the last 12 months due to the unbalanced competition between the domestic manufactures and the cheap imports from ASEAN nations.

Citing statistics, IPMA added that over the course of last three years, the imports have gone up by 40 per cent. This is a big number to adversely impact the domestic manufacturing and processing industry.

Of these numbers, in the FY17, imports from ASEAN countries including Indonesia and Thailand experienced a significant hike of over 67 per cent as compared to the import in the previous fiscal.

IPMA has urged the government to take stock of the situation and impose a safeguard duty or tariff as well as non-tariff barriers to keep a check on the imports.

Referring to the flagship Make in India project of the government, the association said that the Indian mills should be made a part of it and the sector must expand, instead of imports taking the space in the domestic market. (KNN/DA)
