SMEs may get equal opp. to bid in defence procurement: Sitharaman

New Delhi, Dec 15 (KNN) In an attempt to woo the sector, Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that the startups and the Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in the country are to have equal opportunity to bid equally along with big players in defence sector.

The Minister made the remarks during the 90th Annual General Meeting of FICCI in the national capital.

Sitharaman further said that even though the Defence sector is now open the government is clear on the fact that the benefits have to reach the SMEs of India.

Commenting on the engagement of the private sector, the Defence Minister said that the government is to ensure that every private sector investment is on a data pool in an attempt to ensure a win-win situation for both the player and the government.

Sitharaman told industry that her Ministry is in the process of identifying organically grown small scale industrial units producing components for a wide range of Defence needs, from heavy vehicles to aerospace, and is looking at developing the same.

Sitharaman informed that a major review of the Ordnance Factories was on the anvil factoring in their integration and what needed to be given to them.

The Defence Ministry has also directed the Defence Research & Development Organisation to identify the patentable products that could be commercially used, Sitharaman added. (KNN/DA)
