Avoid filing of patents without appropriate techno-commercial evaluation: CSIR to its laboratories

New Delhi, Nov 24 (KNN) The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has sent out a message to all its laboratories to avoid filing of patents without appropriate techno-commercial evaluation, Minister of State for Science & Technology and Earth Sciences, Shri Y.S.Chowdhary informed the Parliament today.

He said this message was sent to exercise utmost due diligence in filing of patents in order to align the IP strategy of CSIR with the priorities of socio-economic development including escalating costs of patent filings.

In order to put in place an appropriate system, CSIR has established IP Directorate at CSIR to analyze IP (Intellectual Property) life cycle from generation to exploitation.

It has also done preparation of standard operating procedures (SOP) and guidelines for evaluation of inventions in alignment with National IPR Policy.

Meanwhile, according to a media report, the CSIR had recently asked as many as 38 laboratories in India to avoid indiscriminate filing of Indian and foreign patents.

It had said that 25% of expenses incurred on prosecution and maintenance of Indian patents and up to 50% of expenses on foreign patents will be borne by the laboratories and in case they succeeded in licensing, headquarter would give them a matching grant.
