Fish processing unit and cold storage to be set up in West Bengal’s Digha to boost exports

Kolkata, Sept 7 (KNN) The Bengal Government is planning to set up the infrastructure to enhance fish exports from the region for which an industrial-standard fish processing unit and a cold storage is being planned for Digha.

Up to 40 tonnes processed fish can be stored for months together in the planned cold storage.

The West Bengal Fisheries Development Corporation Ltd. (WBFC) would be setting up the export processing infrastructure.

It is estimated that Rs 5 crore will be spent to construct the export centre which would t come up in a year’s time.

The construction work would kick-start in late November or early December. This would be the first such large-capacity unit of the Bengal Government.

In many countries, the consumption of pre-packed processed fish is on the rise. Europe, USA and the Gulf countries are the primary destinations for the exporting of processed fish. Bengal has already taken big steps in sending its pisciculture products to other parts of the country; and now it is gearing up to capture the export market in a major way.
