Supreme Court eases ban on use of petcoke - furnace oil for industry

New Delhi, Dec 14 (KNN) In a sign of relief for the industries including cement manufacturing and lime industries the Supreme Court on Wednesday eased its ban on use of petcoke, furnace oil for power generation.

The ease comes from a bench headed by justice Madan B. Lokur. The Court directed the government to revise its notification permitting the use.

The court also asked the government to lay down regulations for the usage of petcock and SC further directed the government to consider consultation with all stakeholders over the issue of import of petcoke.

Earlier, the ministry of environment and forest (MoEF) on 4 December appealed for the ban on use of petcoke and furnace oil to be lifted for a certain period for power generation and cement manufacturing industries so that in the meantime, these industries could explore alternate mechanisms.

It was raised that the use of petcoke in cement manufacturing plants was on a minuscule and it was used for non-fuel purposes. Also the use of furnace oil in electricity generation plants was low in cement manufacturing units. (KNN/DA)
