Govt establishes industrial estates then sanction residential areas around it and finally asks units to shift: Telangana MSMEs

Hyderabad, July 18 (KNN) The 18 month deadline for the city based industries to shift to the outer ring road limits is a direct assault on the SMEs in the region, said Federation of Telangana Small Industries Association (FETSIA).

K.T. Rama Rao, Industries minister, on Saturday, gave a clear deadline saying that no industry will be allowed to function within city limits after December, 2017.

As many as 1070 units have been reported as polluting units and have been asked to shift outside the city within this year and the rest by December 2017.

Talking to KNN in this regard, J. Nageswara Rao, President , FETSIA said , “These industrial estates were established long back by the government itself when they lied completely outside the fringes of residential colonies and domestic use and the same  government bodies sanctioned the residential access to these areas thus, holding the industries itself in the city responsible for the pollution is not right.”

“This is not at all the fault of the industries operating since last 20 years or so. It, in fact is the irrational decision allowing the residential access to the areas where industries operate,” Rao opined.

“The government itself is responsible to maintain a buffer zone between industrial space and residential areas. Their failure to do the same has been the sole cause of factors like pollution etc. becoming a reason for the industries to shift. The SMEs thus, now have to suffer irrespective of the fault not being theirs”, the President explained.

“Shifting the industry base outside the city has the capital loss of at least 40% and the industry in Telangana is sure to get paralysed due to such huge loss afflicted on them. Plant, machinery, workforce migration, rehabilitation all this amounts to at least a loss of 40%. The government thus is ought to reimburse this loss legitimately because SMEs are at no fault, government itself invited the industrial setup I the city long back”, Rao said.

Rao also stated the other big issue in the region is that the property tax has been increased by 400% in one stroke which is a direct assault on the industry against which FETSIA has been protesting since last four years. But “nothing has yet been done to address the peak high property tax and revive the sick units in the area” as per the FETSIA Chief.

Thus, such a major step though deemed to be in the interest of public health, well-being and pollution free environs needs to correctly address the grievances of the effected industry also via proper recovery, revival and rehabilitation plans. (KNN/ GK)
