Process underway for the proposed defence corridor in Tamil Nadu

New Delhi, Feb 28 (KNN) In order to open new opportunities in production for the Defence sector, the Ministry of Defence has started to set up Defence production corridor in Tamil Nadu.

The process of preparing a Detailed Project Report (DPR) is in progress to set up corridor.

“The corridor, which is organized as a quadrilateral will extend from Chennai, Hosur, Coimbatore, Salem and Tiruchi,” a press release from the Defence Ministry said.

The top consultancy firm will be engaged by the Department of Defence Production which is the part of Defence Ministry to draw up the DPR for the Tamil Nadu Defence Quad.

In the Budget 2018-19, Finance Minister Arun Jaitely had announced that the 2 defence production corridors will be set up and the defence quad or quadrilateral is one of them.

According to the release the defence production corridor will provide humongous opportunities to manufacturing sector in Tamil Nadu to participate in production for defence sector.

With a view to take forward this initiative, the Ministry has started an exercise with the industry and MSMEs at 5 nodal points.

“These interactions will involve senior officers from MoD, representatives of Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd., Bharat Electronics Ltd., Bharat Earth Movers Ltd. and Ordnance Factories,” the release said.

The first interaction held at Hosur On Monday. The other interactions will be held at Coimbatore on March 5, Salem on March 7, and Chennai on March 10. The dates for Tiruchi will be announced separately, the release said.
