Sindhudurg, Devgad alphonsos get GI tag

Mumbai, Apr 25 (KNN) The highly popular mango varieties - Alphonsos from Devgad and Sindhudurg – have bagged Geographical Indication (GI) tag.

The GI is given to any product which corresponds to a specific geographical location or origin.

After being accorded the tag, Alphonso will now only be sold by farmers from Ratnagiri and Devgad area of Konkan in Maharashtra by using the tag GI tag. The GI tag will ensure that the popular name can be used only by registered users.

This has taken the total number of GI-tagged products in the state to 25, the highest in the country.

So far, GI has been awarded to 87 products related to agriculture sector in the country.
