Coir exports likely to cross Rs 5,000 cr in FY22: D. Kuppuramu

New Delhi, Aug 12 (KNN) The coir board is expecting the exports to surpass Rs 5,000 crore this fiscal year, D. Kuppuramu, Chairman of the board said recently.

In a recent interview, Kuppuramu said that there is a demand in the overseas market for agro-based products from India, our exporters should focus on value addition. That is what the Board is focusing on.

According to the data by the coir board, the coir exports from India touched Rs 4,340.05 crore in the 2021-22, witnessed a jump of 14.8 per cent in value compared to 2020-21, according to the Coir Board. 

“In terms of quantity, exports grew 6.2 per cent to 12.34 lakh tonnes against 11.63 lakh tonnes in previous year,” he said.

In the previous financial year, the value added products contributed  33 per cent of the exports.

Coir pith exports were worth Rs 2,259.18 crores and tufted mats Rs 1,001.15 crore. In recent times the coir fibre exports had reduced because of lower imports by China. 

The chairman further suggested that to increase the exports from the country, price realisation of value-added products is very important.  (KNN Bureau)
