Govt is exploring all possible measures to improve the availability of Onion in domestic market: DGFT

New Delhi, Dec 6 (KNN) The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) has said that the Government is exploring all possible measures to improve the availability of Onion in domestic market.

In a Trade Notice to Customs Commissionaretes and Revenue Department officials, DGFT has said that government has already put a ban on export of onion. Speedy import is also necessary to boost domestic supply.

In this regard, it is of paramount importance to clear import consignments at the different ports, said the Directorate.

In order to facilitate the import of onions, DGFT has asked the officials to give suitable instructions to the field formations of Customs Authorities for expeditious clearance of onion consignments.

The data available from consumer affairs department showed that onion prices touched Rs 165 a kg in Panaji on Thursday, and there are also reports of price touching Rs 180 a kg in some other parts of the country.

The onion prices in the National Capital soared past the mark of Rs 100 per kg again on Thursday.

With domestic production of onions down by 26% this kharif season, the Centre has been making efforts to import onions from Egypt and Turkey in a bid to cool down prices.

The Union Cabinet has given its approval to the import of 1.2 lakh onions by central trade agency MMTC, which has contracted for 21,090 MT so far. The first tranche of 6,090 tonnes from Egypt is expected to arrive in Mumbai next week. (KNN Bureau)
