India’s first GI store launched at Goa International Airport

New Delhi, Jan 30 (KNN) The Union Minister for Commerce & Industry and Civil Aviation Suresh Prabhu launched the India’s first Geographical Indication (GI) store at Dabolim International Airport in Goa.

“The GI store has been set up by the Cashew Export Promotion Council of India (CEPCI) for promoting the GI products from India in order to enhance its market ability & sale ability”, tweeted Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP).

The store will display and sell original and authentic products recognized as GIs under the Geographical Indication of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999.

Speaking on the occasion, Prabhu said “GIs reflect our rich cultural heritage and also have the potential to strengthen our economy as a whole, especially the incomes of our rural farmers and artisans producing these GI products.”

He said that DIPP has been proactively taking measures to spread awareness about authentic GI products of India, including the recently launched GI logo & tagline.

He further stated that Government of India is also looking to open GI stores at airports across the country.
