MSMEs need to understand the importance of human resource: Expert

New Delhi, Nov 17 (KNN) The best strategy for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) to grow in market like India is to understand the importance of Human Resource (HR), said Marcos Segador Arrebola, Country Manager of Gi Group India.

MSMEs, which hire 40% of country’s workforce, pay less attention to human resource management (HRM) and put more attention on day to day business operations.

On one hand, the rise of skill based economy increases the importance of human resource management while on the other hand it is ignored by MSMEs.

With regard to the role and importance of HRM for MSMEs, KNN India spoke to Marcos Segador Arrebola, Country Manager of Gi Group India. He is an internationally experienced manager, with a successful record leading top performing multicultural teams and top performing brands.

Speaking with KNN India, Marcos said “It’s true that MSMEs focus more on day to day business operations and neglects human resource management.”

But the best strategy is to understand the importance of HR in market like India, he added.

HR is not core for these small firms but as the size of firm increases human resource becomes important and to change the level of dimension it becomes necessary also.

He said “HR is strategic regardless of sector and segment.”

HR is not anymore a nice to have function. It is not anymore a function that tries to keep employees somehow happy. It is becoming strategic to get the best people (resources) to help company achieve its goal, he explained.

On problem of investing in HR in country like India due to lack of financial resources, he said “When managers and leaders of the company understand the concept of return and investment of good HR strategy the problem of investment in HR would get automatically solved.”

They need to understand that the money they are investing in HR will bring back the profits and has multiplier effect.

Emphasizing on improvement of skills which is required in India to fill the skill gap, Marcos said that government of India has taken few initiatives to improve the situation but the size of country is so big that the more the stakeholders collaborate with this goal, the better the situation will be solved.

This requires all level of formal education and training both at public and private level, on the job training and the follow up at all the levels. This situation would be solved better when we take right actions in right direction, he added.

Gi-group would be happy to support the key players, stakeholders in labour market in solving this problem of skill gap, said Marcos.

Skills are developing very fast and most of the skills today will become obsolete tomorrow that is why HR is becoming more strategic for the companies, he emphasized.

To address the HR challenges, he said “There is no single solution to address the HR challenges as every company faces different challenges depending on the various factors. Here, companies must understand that what they exactly need to solve the challenges.”

In providing solutions to MSMEs in HR space, he said “Choosing right strategy is fundamental for the success of company or the firm in medium and long term.”

On global pattern of hiring, Marcos pointed that pattern depends on situation of country.

He said different countries have different growth patterns, level of business creation, enterprises and technology, the pattern would be better answered case by case.

He explained that the impact of new technology is universal but the way it is implemented in companies depends on situation of the country.

Impact of technology implemented defines the clear trend but implementation depends country by country, he pointed.

Further he raised an important point that the there is a big gap between what companies need and reality of market.

The success mantra for company is to attract the right talent, said Marcos.

The HR department is responsible for maintaining relationships with employees in a unionized work environment. It also focuses on strengthening the relationships among employees. As a result, the HR department is in a position to resolve all sorts of conflicts that arise within the organization.
