MSME Ministry plans to set-up Technology Development Centre in Coimbatore

Coimbatore, Aug 13 (KNN) The Ministry of Micro, Small, and Medium-scale Enterprises (MSMEs) is planning to establish a Technology Development Centre in Coimbatore , said Additional Development Commissioner D. Chandra Sekhar.

“The Tamil Nadu government has provided 13.75 acres of land in Sulur for setting up the centre.The union government will invest Rs 200 crore,” Sekhar told the Hindu on Friday.

The government is also planning to hold a stake holders meet before commissioning the Centre. 

Sekhar further highlighted that TDC was for general engineering and would have the latest machinery to provide value added services to the units here. 

The nearby MSMEs will be benefitted as they could design, develop prototypes, take up re-engineering works, and train workers through the Centre. The centre will run on a self-sustainable model.

As many as 18 TDCs were operational across the country and nearly  two lakh people have received training in these centre’s.

Another 20 TDCs had been approved and almost 15 more were under development. Amongst these,some belong to the automobile sector. 

In Coimbatore too, a centre of excellence could be established at the TDC to help MSMEs in the automobile sector shift to the EV sector,”he added.

While addressing the conference on “Pioneering a Clean & Just ICEV - EV Transition for MSMEs in Coimbatore” organised by the World Resources Institute India, Chandra Sekhar said that the number of components required for Internal Combustion Engine Vehicles was nearly 2,000 as against 200 for Electric Vehicles (EVs). 

The financial schemes launched by the government, such as PLI, Standup India, and Collateral Free loans, will play an important role in helping the MSMEs transit to the EV sector faster.  (KNN Bureau)
