Importer Exporter Code (IEC) will be issued in the name of the firm, not individual: DGFT

New Delhi, Dec 13 (KNN) The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) has clarified that the Importer Exporter Code (IEC) will be issued in the name of the firm and not in individual’s name.

The clarification was issued after DGFT observed that there was confusion about as to whose name IEC is going to be issued and also about the address and proof thereof.

IEC or Importer Exporter Code is unique 10 digit code issued by DGFT to Indian Companies and individuals to enable them carry International Trade. To import or export in India, IEC Code is mandatory.

In a Trade Notice, DGFT said, “IEC is to be issued in the name of the firm. So application has to be made in the name of a firm. The firm may be proprietorship, partnership, LLP firm, HU firm, an individual or a company (that includes Government Undertaking, Public or Private Limited Company, Section 25 company, one Director Company, Registered Society, Trust).

DGFT said that, “It is to be noted that the mobile number and email id of the applicant will be used for verification and subsequent log in. Both cannot be changed simultaneously at any point of time.”

The address of the firm and documents in support of that address are required to be submitted.

For proof of address either of the documents that can be accepted as proof of address are – Aadhaar Card, Voters ID Card, Passport, Electricity, Telephone Bill, GST Registration Certificate, Bank Certificate as in ANF 2(A) (I) or Sale, Lease, Rent deed.

Clarifying on Bank Certificate/ pre-printed cancelled cheque, DGFT said either a pre-printed cheque or a bank certificate has to be uploaded. (KNN Bureau)
