A Whopping 71% Increase In New Solar & Wind Capacity in 2025

New Delhi, Oct 13 (KNN) India’s renewable energy sector added 34.4 GW of new solar and wind power capacity during the first nine months of 2025, marking a 71 per cent increase compared to the same period last year.

According to Jyoti Gulia, Founder, CEO, JMK Research, solar capacity grew by nearly 69 per cent, while wind installations saw an even stronger increase of 88.8 per cent year-on-year.

India’s renewable energy capacity additions from January to September 2025 have already surpassed the total installations achieved in 2024, according to a report by Business Standard.

India’s total renewable energy capacity stood at 247.3 GW at the end of September 2025. Solar energy accounts for 52 per cent of the total, followed by wind (21per cent), large hydro (20per cent), bio power (5 per cent), and small hydro (2 per cent).

Between January and September 2025, about 22.5 GW of new utility-scale solar projects were commissioned — half of which came online in the third quarter alone.

Rooftop solar also witnessed a sharp rise, with 5.8 GW added — up 81 per cent year-on-year.

Public Sector Banks sanctioned over 5.79 lakh loan applications worth Rs 10,907 crore under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana to accelerate household solar adoption.

In the off-grid segment, 1,166 MW was installed, 13 per cent higher than last year, while wind energy added 4.96 GW during the same period.

Experts anticipate this momentum to continue through the final quarter of 2025, with an additional 11–12 GW expected to be commissioned.

Total solar and wind installations are projected to reach a record 45–46 GW by the end of the year, reinforcing India’s position as one of the world’s fastest-growing clean energy markets.
