Assam’s GI-Tagged Tezpur Litchi Makes First Export To Dubai: APEDA

Dispur, Jun 9 (KNN) A one-metric-tonne consignment of Geographical Indication (GI)-tagged Tezpur Litchi from Assam was exported to Dubai on June 7, marking the first international shipment of the prized fruit and a significant step in opening global markets to agricultural produce from India's North Eastern Region.

The export was facilitated by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) in partnership with DMR Green Valley Agro Fresh Pvt. Ltd.

A Fruit with a Distinct Identity

Tezpur Litchi, sourced from the Sonitpur district of Assam, is known for its exceptional sweetness, bright-red appearance, distinctive aroma, and eating quality. Its GI status has strengthened its identity and market recognition, enhancing its appeal with international buyers.

APEDA said the shipment reflects the growing global acceptance of India's GI-tagged agricultural products and underscores the export potential of the North Eastern Region, according to ANI.

Better Returns for Farmers

A notable outcome of the initiative has been improved farm-gate pricing. Growers associated with the export supply chain received nearly 10 per cent higher prices compared to prevailing domestic market rates, despite robust local demand for the fruit.

APEDA said, "The shipment has created new marketing opportunities for litchi growers and is expected to encourage greater participation in export-oriented value chains, contributing to enhanced incomes and sustainable livelihood opportunities," as cited by ANI.
