Implementing strict water laws on MSMEs won’t be useful, says IIA

New Delhi, Sep 12 (KNN) The Indian Industries Association (IIA) has submitted its representation to UP's Minister of Jal Shakti and Ground Water Department on UP ground water act and said that implementing strict laws for groundwater use only on MSME industries won’t be useful.

‘’If all MSME units in the state are closed down, then only 4% of ground water can be stopped. So, implementing strict and stagnant laws only on industries won’t solve the problems,’’ said IIA in its representation.

According to sources, 45 lakh tube wells are operated by small irrigation department in the state and 20 lakhs are operated by the private tube well farmers. The water corporation has 10 lakh tube wells in the state. All these tube wells pump water at a rate of 1000 liters per minute.

Apart from these, about 35 thousand tube wells are also operated in the state by the Department of Irrigation, while seven lakh manufacturing MSMEs in the state, only 25% of them consume water with the help of 3hp tube wells.

According to the RTI report, dated on 28.5.2019, Central Ground Water Authority (CGWA) disclosed that a total of 48.22 BCM (Billion Cubic Meters) use in agriculture while a total of 4.41 BCM of ground water use domestically Central Ground Water.

There is a need to declare that there is a total of 48.22 BCM (Billion Cubic Meters) in ground water and total 4.41 BCM of ground water is in domestic use and industries as per information received from Central Ground Water Authority (CGWA) through RTI dated 28.5.2019 (attached enclosed).

In comparison to agriculture, only 8.38% of ground water is used in domestic and industries.

Even if the industry is separated, only 4% of ground water is used in industries, the representation suggested.
