Indecisiveness of Meerut administration forces more Industries under locked down & shed workforce

New Delhi, May 25 (KNN) Not being able to restart in spite of clear guidelines, industries in Meerut are resorting to retrenchment and downsizing work force.

Industry bodies of the district have accused that at a time when the entire country is opening up, Meerut administration continues to flounder on allowing industries to re-start during COVID lockdown 4.0.

“The system of granting permission is opaque and discretionary and not based on rational parameters. MSMEs apply for permission which is promptly denied to most without assigning any reason but given to chosen few”, alleged the local industry bodies.

Among the ones denied permission thrice during last one month is one of the largest employers and the top tax payer of the region, Kanohar Electricals Ltd.  For two months in complete lockdown, the company which employs over 400 people, is downsizing work force by half.

“Why should you need permission once as a policy it is allowed for industries to restart? When the UP-Chief Minister is trying hard to create employment opportunities to keep unemployed youth within the State, administration seems clearly working at cross purpose”, says Anil Bhardwaj Secretary General of Federation of Indian Micro and Small& Medium Enterprises (FISME).

A major industrial town of the State, Meerut houses over 30,000 smalls to big units’ part of industrial clusters including Sports Goods, Scissors, Electric Transformers, Glass & Wooden Beads, Embroidery Cluster and Artificial Jewellery.

COVID-19 pandemic has put UP Government in tremendous stress due to thousands of workers returning from States they were employed and lost their jobs during lockdown.

The State Government has recently announced a policy to provide jobs to 20 lakh migrant workers through labour reforms in their villages and towns and to guarantee a minimum salary of Rs 15,000.
