NGT forms 3 member committee to monitor compliance order issued against pollution generating industries in western UP

New Delhi, Aug 14 (KNN) The National Green Tribunal has formed a 3 member committee under the chairmanship of former Allahabad High Court Judge SU Khan to monitor the compliance order issued by NGT on August 8 against the industrial units which are polluting the Kali, Krishna and Hindon rivers in six districts of western Uttar Pradesh.

Scientists from the Ministry of Environment and Central Pollution Control Board are also members of this committee to look into the probe.

In this matter, on August 8, 2018 the National Green Tribunal ordered closure and registration of cases against 124 industrial units which are polluting these rivers.

The tribunal asked the state government to devise health benefit schemes for persons suffering from ailments caused due to drinking polluted water.

The NGT had asked the state government to file a compliance report till March 5, 2019.

Earlier, the NGT had ordered the sealing of all the hand pumps and bore wells in one month which are discharging contaminated water to six districts of western Uttar Pradesh. 

These include Ghaziabad, Baghpat, Shamli, Muzaffarnagar, Meerut and Gautam Buddha Nagar. 

The NGT had told the state government in an order that ground water is being polluted due to the Hinden, Krishna and Kali rivers of western Uttar Pradesh.

In this regard, NGT has instructed the District Magistrates of theses six districts to consider the report of the special committee and submit the report to NGT after conducting the enquiry.
