New Delhi, Oct 17 (KNN) Almost 400 tanneries which contribute to the major export of Kanpur will be affected if shut down for three months, said Sunil Vaish, President, Indian Industries Association.

The Government of Uttar Pradesh has recently taken a decision to close tanneries operating in Kanpur and Unnao, between December to March, 2019.

This step has been taken in order to provide clean water for devotees participating in the upcoming Ardh Kumbh festival.

While talking to KNN India, Vaish quoted, The tannery industry is already facing problems, and now after this step it will shatter.

He added, Almost 400 tanneries will be affected, which contributes to the major total export from Kanpur. Exports are already declining in Kanpur, and now will further decline.

Talking about the water contamination due to the tannery industry he said that, Only 20% of water is affected by the industry. The government should operate and monitor various devices that have been set-up for cleaning of water rather than shutting tanneries for 3 months.

He further said that it will put a very bad impact on both manufacturers and labourers. The industries should be improved rather than banned.

There are various other reasons for the contamination which should be looked upon, he mentioned.
