Meghalaya’s Ryndia Handloom Producers Apply For GI Tag

ENA State 2023-08-08 13:50:54 Shillong, Aug 8 (KNN) Meghalaya Ryndia Producers Association has moved Geological Indications Registry for geological indications (GI) tag for Ryndia a renowned traditional fabric woven by the tribes of Meghalaya, reported Meghalaya Monitor. Tmung, President of the Meghalaya Ryndia Producers Association revealed this on Monday during the celebration of National Handloom Day at National Institute of Fashion Technology, Umsawli. Later, speaking at the programme, Nongpoh MLA Mayralborn Syiem whose consistency is known for Ryndia products, also stressed on the need for Geographical Identification (GI) tag as it will be beneficial in maintaining its unique identification and recognition. He reiterated the importance of preserving and upholding the traditional traits of rearing. While informing that the handloom products from the state have received appreciation from Europe and other parts of the world, Textiles Minister Paul Lyngdoh called upon the weavers to incorporate unique ideas and concepts into their work in order to cater and compete in the international market. Commissioner and Secretary of Textiles Frederick Kharkongor said the textile industry has been there in the state from time immemorial. He said the textile industry is a combination of elements from the environment and it also showcases the culture and tradition and department is planning to have textile Ambassadors to popularise the products. During the programme, the chief guest along with other dignitaries released a Coffee Table Book on Meghalaya Silk titled Woven Narratives and also unveiled the Textile Map of Meghalaya. The event was organised by the Department of Textiles, Government of Meghalaya in association with the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), Ministry of Textiles, Government of India.
