New Delhi, Jun 10 (KNN) The Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC), a government-backed e-commerce platform, achieved a significant milestone in May by recording an all-time high of 8.9 million transactions across retail and ride-hailing segments, according to official figures released by the network.

This figure represents a substantial 23 per cent month-on-month increase in total transaction volume for the ONDC.

The retail segment saw particularly robust growth, with orders reaching a new peak of 5 million in May, up from 3.59 million in April.

The network even witnessed a single-day record of 200,000 retail transactions during the month.

Breaking down the retail orders, the grocery and food delivery categories each surpassed the 1 million order mark for the first time.

The home and kitchen category registered 630,000 orders, while fashion accounted for 330,000 orders. The remaining retail sub-categories collectively contributed 2 million orders.

While the ride-hailing segment on ONDC exhibited slower growth, it still saw an increase from 3.6 million trips in April to 3.8 million in May, although lower than its March peak of 4 million trips.

The ONDC network now boasts around 535,000 sellers across over 1,200 cities in India. Notably, 84 per cent of these sellers are small businesses, contributing 56 per cent of the total orders on the platform.

In a separate development, reports suggest that e-commerce giant Flipkart may soon venture into the food and beverages (F&B) category on the ONDC. This potential move could allow users to order from a wide range of restaurants and fast-food outlets, such as Domino's and McDonald's, directly through the Flipkart app.

(KNN Bureau)
