Singh's remarks came during an event on Monday celebrating World Accreditation Day, organised by the Quality Council of India.

In his address, the senior official emphasised the need to transcend standard practices and develop more robust processes.

Strengthening the accreditation body and the entire quality system is not just a necessity but a strategic move towards excellence, a statement from the Commerce and Industry Ministry quoted Singh.

India's accreditation infrastructure comprises the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) and the National Accreditation Board for Certification Bodies (NABCB).

These entities are signatories to the multilateral recognition arrangements of the International Accreditation Forum and the International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation, respectively.

According to the ministry, NABL currently has over 8,000 accredited laboratories, while NABCB has accredited more than 260 Conformity Assessment Bodies.

The Quality Council of India (QCI), an autonomous body established in 1997 under the DPIIT, serves as the nation's apex organisation for operating the third-party national accreditation system, promoting quality across sectors, and advising the government and stakeholders on quality-related matters.

Singh's comments underscore the Indian government's commitment to enhancing the country's quality infrastructure, a crucial component for fostering economic growth and international competitiveness.
