BIS Introduces New Safety Standards For Electric Vehicles In India

The standards, designated as IS 18590: 2024 and IS 18606: 2024, specifically target vehicles in the L, M, and N categories, which encompass two-wheelers, four-wheelers, and goods trucks, respectively. These new regulations primarily focus on the powertrain components of electric cars, buses, and trucks, including critical elements such as the motor and transmission. According to a statement from the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, These standards focus on the critical component of electric vehicles--the powertrain--ensuring it meets stringent safety requirements. Additionally, they emphasise the safety and performance of batteries, ensuring they are both powerful and secure. The introduction of these guidelines brings the total number of local standards dedicated to electric vehicles and their accessories, including charging systems, to 30. This comprehensive approach underscores India's commitment to fostering a more sustainable, environmentally friendly, and efficient transportation system. In response to the growing popularity of electric vehicles beyond traditional cars and trucks, BIS has also introduced IS 18294: 2023. This standard establishes safety guidelines specifically for e-rickshaws and E-Karts, aiming to ensure the safe construction and operation of these vehicles to protect both drivers and passengers.
