This development marks a potential expansion of Foxconn's operations in India, which have thus far primarily focused on iPhone production. According to sources familiar with the matter, Foxconn is seriously looking to start assembling Apple iPads at its facility in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu, reported ET. This step would represent a significant broadening of Apple's manufacturing footprint in India, which has until now been largely limited to smartphone assembly by Foxconn and other international contract manufacturers. The move aligns with Apple's ongoing strategy to diversify its manufacturing operations away from China. The tech giant has already shifted some iPad production to Vietnam last year, and this potential expansion into India further underscores this trend. Industry experts note that assembling iPads in India should be relatively straightforward for Foxconn, given its existing capabilities in iPhone production. Recent policy changes, such as the reduction of Basic Customs Duty on certain components from 20 per cent to 15 per cent in the latest budget, are expected to facilitate domestic manufacturing plans. It's worth noting that Apple's previous attempts to manufacture iPads in India faced challenges due to government restrictions related to its partnership with Chinese company BYD. However, the current climate seems more favourable for such ventures.
