Advance Import Monitoring System SIMS 2.0 Puts In Place To Protect Steel Industry

Kumaraswamy, unveiled SIMS 2.0, an enhanced version of the Steel Import Monitoring System, in New Delhi on Friday. The launch event was attended by Minister of State for Steel and Heavy Industries, Bhupathiraju Srinivasa Varma, and Steel Secretary Nagendra Nath Sinha, among other senior government officials. SIMS 2.0 builds upon its predecessor, introduced in 2019, which has been instrumental in providing comprehensive steel import data to the domestic industry. The upgraded system incorporates API integration with multiple government portals, a robust data entry system, and improved quality control measures. The new version boasts enhanced data quality and consistency, streamlined processes for improved efficiency, integration of various databases for better risk management, and improved analysis capabilities for customs authorities. The development of SIMS 2.0 was a collaborative effort involving the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), and MSTC Ltd., a Central Public Sector Enterprise under the Ministry of Steel. Minister Kumaraswamy emphasised that the launch of SIMS 2.0 aligns with the government's 100-day agenda and supports the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat. Minister of State Varma added that the enhanced portal would provide stakeholders with actionable intelligence for more effective decision-making. Steel Secretary Sinha highlighted the significance of the system, noting that despite India's position as the second-largest steel producer globally, finished steel imports remained substantial at approximately eight million tonnes in 2023-24. He expressed confidence that SIMS 2.0 would contribute to maintaining a healthy trade balance and attracting investment in the steel sector. During the event, Minister Kumaraswamy also released the second volume of Safety Guidelines for Iron of Steel Sector, which outlines guidelines for 16 different processes in the industry. This publication builds on the 25 safety guidelines released by the Steel Ministry in 2020. While currently voluntary, these guidelines are expected to have a positive impact on both safety standards and productivity in the sector. The launch of SIMS 2.0 and the release of additional safety guidelines represent significant steps in the government's efforts to strengthen India's domestic steel industry and improve safety standards across the sector.
