New Delhi, Dec 5 (KNN) In a major boost to Indias infrastructure ambitions, Union Minister for Road, Transport, and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, announced that approximately 75 tunnel projects worth Rs 49,000 crore are under construction across the nation.

Speaking at the 'World Tunnel Day 2024 Conference on Safe & Sustainable Tunneling', Gadkari highlighted the transformative potential of the tunnel sector in advancing Indias development.

Our Prime Minister envisions making India the worlds third-largest economy. To achieve this, we need world-class infrastructure. Our government has prioritised this by investing in robust infrastructure projects, said Gadkari.

The minister noted that the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has already completed 35 tunnel projects, spanning 49 kilometers, at a cost of Rs 20,000 crore.

Currently, 146 kilometers of tunnel projects are under construction, and an additional 78 projects, covering 285 kilometers and worth Rs 1.10 lakh crore, are in the pipeline.

One standout proposal includes the construction of a significant tunnel beneath the Brahmaputra River in Assam. Two days ago, I discussed this project with Assams Chief Minister.

This would be a landmark undertaking for Indias tunnel engineering sector, Gadkari revealed, urging contractors and consultants to seize opportunities in this growing industry.

Tunnels, Gadkari emphasised, are not just critical for expanding road networks but are equally vital for hydroelectric projects, metro systems, and railways. He urged stakeholders to prioritise safety and sustainability in tunnel development, reflecting global standards.

Indias emphasis on tunneling aligns with its strategy to overcome geographical challenges, ensure better connectivity, and support economic growth.

The focus on mega tunnel projects underscores the governments commitment to building resilient infrastructure and positioning the country as a global leader in engineering innovation.

With substantial investments and groundbreaking initiatives, the tunnel sector is poised to play a pivotal role in shaping Indias infrastructure landscape and driving economic progress.
