ENA Economy 2025-03-25 16:01:55 New Delhi, Mar 25 (KNN) The Ministry of Steel has marked a significant milestone in India's industrial development by signing Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) under the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme 1.1 for specialty steel, a strategic initiative aimed at transforming the nation's steel manufacturing landscape. Union Steel Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy characterised the scheme as a critical step towards realising Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of self-reliance and reducing dependency on imported high-grade steel varieties. Initially launched in July 2021, the PLI scheme encompasses five broad categories and 19 sub-categories of specialty steel, with a stringent eligibility criterion requiring companies to be registered in India and engaged in end-to-end steel production. The government's approach demonstrates a calculated strategy to incentivise domestic manufacturing, offering financial incentives ranging from 3-4 percent based on investment and production achievements. The scheme has generated substantial industry interest, with the first round attracting 44 applications from 23 companies and incentives already disbursed for one project. The second round has witnessed even more robust participation, with 25 companies submitting 42 applications and committing investments totaling Rs 17,000 crore. This overwhelming response underscores the industry's confidence in the government's manufacturing strategy. Minister Kumaraswamy made a passionate appeal to domestic steelmakers, urging them to focus on specialty steel production. He emphasised that successful domestic manufacturing of specialty steel would significantly enhance the country's production capacity and contribute to the broader goal of national self-reliance. The minister explicitly highlighted India's unique position as the second-largest producer and consumer of steel, yet still reliant on imports for certain high-grade varieties. The expansion of the PLI scheme is expected to substantially enhance India's global competitiveness in steel production. By creating a supportive ecosystem for domestic manufacturers, the initiative aims to reduce import dependency and position India as a global hub for high-quality steel manufacturing. The scheme represents a comprehensive approach to industrial development, combining financial incentives, strategic planning, and a clear national vision. Senior government officials, including Secretary for Steel Sandeep Poundrik, Joint Secretary Abhijit Narendra, and MECON Managing Director SK Verma, were present at the event, signaling the high-level commitment to this transformative initiative.
