ENA Sectors 2025-04-23 16:33:02 <p><span style="font-size:14px"><strong>Mumbai, April 23 (KNN)</strong> In a landmark move, the Maharashtra cabinet on Tuesday granted agriculture status to the fisheries sector, a decision set to benefit over 4.8 lakh fishermen across the state.</span></p> <p><span style="font-size:14px">The move, hailed as historic and revolutionary by State Fisheries Minister Nitesh Rane, is expected to significantly enhance fish production and support rural livelihoods.</span></p> <p><span style="font-size:14px">Until now, fishermen, aqua-culturists, and fish farmers were excluded from key agricultural benefits. With this new status, they will now be eligible for subsidies and facilities similar to those provided to traditional farmers, including access to water, electricity, and insurance schemes.</span></p> <p><span style="font-size:14px">This decision brings fishermen on par with farmers, said Rane. They can now avail of subsidies on fish seed, feed, aerators, and air pumps. In addition, they will be eligible for Kisan Credit Cards and concessional loans.</span></p> <p><span style="font-size:14px">The move aims to strengthen the rural economy and promote employment in coastal and inland regions. In case of natural calamities like floods or droughts, fishermen will also receive compensation and relief packages akin to those provided to farmers.</span></p> <p><span style="font-size:14px">Further benefits include agricultural-rate electricity for fish farms, insurance coverage for fish losses, and support for fishery-related industries and processing units.</span></p> <p><span style="font-size:14px">The fisheries sector contributes significantly to the economy and the nations nutritional needs.
