New Delhi, Jun 25 (KNN) The Technology Development Board (TDB), functioning under the Department of Science and Technology, has extended financial assistance to Gurugram-based BatX Energies Pvt Ltd to scale up its innovative lithium-ion battery recycling project.

The initiative aims to recover up to 99 percent of critical materials such as lithium, cobalt, nickel, and manganese from used batteries, the Ministry of Science & Technology said in a statement.

Titled Technologies for Generation of Battery Grade Materials and Value Addition through Closed Loop, the project is centered on commercialising a proprietary hydrometallurgical process developed by BatX Energies.

The companys patented, low-temperature, low-pressure technology supports dual-mode (wet and dry) black mass recovery and is compatible with various lithium-ion battery chemistries.

Recovery efficiency ranges between 97 percent and 99 percent, according to the firm.

The entire process—from battery collection and shredding to metal leaching and downstream purification—has been indigenously designed and implemented.

BatX has filed seven patents related to its technology, with two already granted.

Highlighting the strategic importance of the initiative, TDB Secretary Rajesh Kumar Pathak said, The shift toward electric mobility and renewable energy must be matched by equally robust recycling infrastructure.

Supporting indigenous technologies like that of BatX Energies strengthens our clean energy supply chain, enhances strategic mineral independence, and positions India to lead in sustainable industrial innovation.

The recovered compounds, such as lithium carbonate and cobalt sulphate, meet global quality standards and are suited for both domestic consumption and international markets.

BatXs process also minimises reliance on imported recycling machinery and helps reduce the import of critical raw materials.

The upcoming facility will mark a transition from pilot-scale operations to full-fledged commercial production.

(KNN Bureau)
