Hyundai, IIT Madras Unveils Hydrogen Innovation Centre in Chennai

ENA State 2025-07-09 16:55:18 New Delhi, Jul 9 (KNN) Hyundai Motor India, in partnership with IIT Madras and Guidance Tamil Nadu, on Tuesday revealed the design of the Hyundai HTWO Innovation Centre — a cutting-edge hydrogen research hub to be established in Chennai. The facility will be located at IIT Madras Discovery Satellite Campus in Thaiyur and was officially unveiled by Tamil Nadus Minister for Industries, Thiru TRB Rajaa. Spread across 65,000 square feet, the innovation centre will focus on advanced hydrogen technologies. It will feature high-tech laboratories for both experimental and computational research, pilot-scale testing areas for electrolysers and fuel cells, and dedicated spaces for demonstrating containerised hydrogen applications. Speaking at the launch, Hyundai Motor India Managing Director Unsoo Kim highlighted the companys longstanding commitment to hydrogen innovation. Hyundai has been leading the global hydrogen movement for over 20 years — from fuel cell electric vehicles to large-scale infrastructure. We were the first to launch a mass-produced fuel cell electric vehicle, Kim said. The HTWO Innovation Centre is part of Hyundais pledge made during the Tamil Nadu Global Investors Meet in January 2024. The automaker, along with its CSR arm Hyundai Motor India Foundation, had announced a joint investment of Rs 100 crore. The total project cost is estimated at Rs 180 crore. The centre is expected to play a key role in advancing clean energy solutions and contributing to Indias green hydrogen goals, positioning Tamil Nadu as a hub for sustainable automotive and energy research.
