India Questions Western Criticism Over Russian Oil Trade

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) defended Indias energy policy, stating that such criticism ignores the trade many Western nations themselves continue to have with Russia. According to the MEA, while India has increased its energy imports from Russia, this was done to ensure affordable and reliable energy for its population in a volatile global market. Officials pointed out that many traditional suppliers had redirected oil exports to Europe after the Ukraine conflict began, prompting India to look elsewhere, including Russia. They also mentioned that India's trade with Russia is mainly in essential sectors like energy and fertilisers. India also highlighted the significant trade volumes between Russia and several Western countries. For instance, the European Unions trade with Russia in goods and services has remained substantial over the past two years. The MEA argued that such data demonstrates a double standard when these same countries question Indias trade decisions. India further noted that even the United States continues limited imports from Russia in sectors like uranium and critical minerals. The government emphasised that its foreign and trade policies are based on national interests and not influenced by external pressure. The statement comes amid reports that the US may consider imposing additional tariffs on Indian goods due to its Russian oil imports. However, India maintained that any such action would be unjustified. With trade talks between India and the US expected later this month, Indian officials reiterated that the country remains committed to fair global trade practices while safeguarding its own economic stability and energy needs.
