Kerala Finance Minister Slams US Tariffs on Indian Goods as ‘Bullying Tactic’

ENA State 2025-08-08 14:13:50 Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 8 (KNN) Kerala Finance Minister K N Balagopal on Friday criticised the United States' recent decision to impose a 50 percent tariff on Indian goods, characterising the move as a bullying tactic designed to exert control over India's economy. Speaking at a press conference, the minister alleged that the tariffs represent an attempt by the US to pressure India into increasing imports of American products. Balagopal attributed the tariff decision to India's enhanced economic position, stating that the US was seeking to leverage India's increased purchasing power. The minister expressed concern that the tariffs would create significant disruptions across multiple sectors of India's export economy. The Finance Minister outlined several key industries that would face adverse impacts from the new tariff structure. He specifically identified fish products, spices, textiles, coir products, and cashews as sectors that would be particularly affected, noting that these goods constitute substantial portions of US imports from India. Beyond direct export implications, Balagopal warned that the tariffs would have broader ramifications for India's domestic governance and public services. He indicated that the measure could disrupt state taxation systems and negatively impact essential sectors including health, education, and other public services. The minister also suggested that the tariffs could affect recruitment processes conducted by Public Service Commissions. He emphasised India's economic strength and called for resistance to what he termed external pressure, stating that India should not capitulate to such measures given its robust economic position.
