ENA State 2025-08-13 14:28:26 Lucknow, Aug 13 (KNN) The Union Cabinet has approved Phase-1B of the Lucknow Metro Rail Project in Uttar Pradesh. The new corridor will span 11.165 km, comprising 12 stations—seven underground and five elevated. Once operational, Lucknows active metro network will extend to 34 km. Phase-1B will primarily serve the citys oldest and most densely populated areas, which currently lack efficient public transport links. The alignment will connect key commercial hubs such as Aminabad, Yahiyaganj, Pandeyganj, and Chowk; King Georges Medical University; major tourist attractions including Bara Imambara, Chota Imambara, Bhool Bhulaiya, Clock Tower, and Rumi Darwaza; as well as popular culinary districts. Officials said the expansion is expected to ease traffic congestion in Old Lucknow, particularly along heavily burdened routes, by offering a fast and reliable alternative to road transport. The shift from fossil fuel-based vehicles to metro rail is projected to reduce carbon emissions, improve road safety, and shorten travel times. The project is also expected to boost economic activity, tourism, and investment in newly connected areas. Improved access to the airport, railway stations, and bus depots is likely to enhance productivity and support local businesses, while equitable access to public transport will benefit diverse socio-economic groups.
