ENA MSME 2025-08-25 17:00:24 <p><span style="font-size:14px"><strong>New Delhi, Aug 25 (KNN)</strong> Ashish Khanna, Director General of the International Solar Alliance (ISA), highlighted significant prospects for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in India and Africa through solar rooftop installations and solar pumps.</span></p> <p><span style="font-size:14px">Speaking at an event organised by the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI), Khanna emphasised the transformative potential of these technologies for local businesses, reported ET.</span></p> <p><span style="font-size:14px">In India, the adoption of solar pumps has seen a substantial increase, with approximately 2 million units installed. The government plans to expand this number to 5 million, aiming to reduce farmers' reliance on diesel and lower operational costs.</span></p> <p><span style="font-size:14px">Each solar pump, costing around Rs 8 lakh (approximately USD 10,000), represents a significant business opportunity, especially in rural areas where such infrastructure can enhance agricultural productivity and economic stability.</span></p> <p><span style="font-size:14px">Khanna also pointed to the vast potential in Africa, citing Ethiopia's need for 1 million solar pumps to achieve food security. With only 10% of its arable land under irrigation, Ethiopia faces challenges in meeting its agricultural demands.</span></p> <p><span style="font-size:14px">Khanna noted that Africa imports approximately USD 400 billion worth of agricultural expertise annually, creating an urgent need for sustainable solutions like solar-powered irrigation systems.</span></p> <p><span style="font-size:14px">India's progress in solar energy is noteworthy, with a cumulative capacity of 119.02 GW as of July 2025, including 19.88 GW from rooftop systems. The government's commitment to renewable energy is evident in initiatives such as the Rooftop Solar Programme and PM-KUSUM, which mandate the use of domestically manufactured solar panels and cells.</span></p> <p><span style="font-size:14px">This focus on local production not only supports the renewable energy sector but also fosters economic growth and job creation.</span></p> <p><span style="font-size:14px">The convergence of technological advancements, supportive policies, and market demand positions solar energy as a catalyst for MSME development in both India and Africa.
