Commerce Ministry Engages Exporters to Tackle Impact of Steep U.S. Tariffs

ENA Sectors 2025-08-27 16:59:51 New Delhi, Aug 27 (KNN) The Commerce Ministry has begun consultations with exporters from major sectors such as chemicals, textiles, gems and jewellery to address the challenges arising from the newly imposed 50% tariffs by the United States. The move follows the implementation of the tariffs on August 27, 2025, which have impacted Indian exports worth over USD 48 billion. Key product categories under pressure include textiles and apparel, gems and jewellery, shrimp, leather and footwear, animal products, chemicals, as well as electrical and mechanical machinery. Industry experts fear significant disruptions to trade flows, with concerns that exporters may lose competitiveness in one of Indias biggest markets. To counter the fallout, the government is expediting work on the Export Promotion Mission, announced in the 2025 26 Union Budget. The mission aims to diversify Indian exports by exploring new markets and reducing dependency on the U.S. Officials have confirmed that a series of meetings will be held over the next two to three days to gather industry input and identify alternative strategies. A government official stated that the discussions would focus on finding ways to broaden Indias export base and mitigate the impact of the steep duties. The ministry is also expected to hold sector-specific talks to ensure immediate relief for the most affected industries. This development underscores Indias efforts to strengthen its global trade presence amid escalating trade tensions with the U.S., while also creating opportunities for exporters to tap into emerging markets.
