India’s Petrol Consumption Rises 5% To 3.5 MT, Diesel Steady At 6.56 MT In August 2025: PPAC

ENA Sectors 2025-09-02 18:06:21 New Delhi, Sep 2 (KNN) Indias petrol consumption grew 5.05 percent year-on-year to 3.53 million tonnes in August 2025, while diesel demand held steady at 6.56 million tonnes, according to provisional data released by the Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell (PPAC) on Monday. Petrol sales increased from 3.36 million tonnes in the same month last year. Diesel consumption, which constitutes the largest share of Indias fuel basket, showed only a marginal rise compared with 6.50 million tonnes in August 2024. Among other fuels, Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) consumption expanded 4.18 percent to 2.89 million tonnes, up from 2.78 million tonnes a year earlier. In contrast, Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) demand slipped 3.57 percent to 0.71 million tonnes, compared with 0.73 million tonnes in August last year, reflecting pressures in the aviation sector. In the April August FY26 period, cumulative petrol consumption stood at 17.78 million tonnes, an increase of 6.44 percent from 16.71 million tonnes a year earlier. Diesel sales rose 2.27 percent to 38.88 million tonnes, while LPG demand climbed 7.73 percent to 13.82 million tonnes during the same period. ATF consumption showed only a modest 1.14 percent growth to 3.69 million tonnes. The data highlights diverging consumption trends across fuels, with steady growth in retail and household segments offset by softer demand in aviation.
