Auto Retail As Crucial Consumer–Industry Bridge: Piyush Goyal

ENA Sectors 2025-09-11 15:27:57 New Delhi, Sep 11 (KNN) Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Wednesday emphasised the crucial role of automobile retail in shaping consumer trust and sustaining industry credibility. Speaking at the inauguration of the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) 7th Auto Retail Conclave and 4th Finance & Insurance Summit, he described the sector as the interface between manufacturers and customers, responsible for ethical marketing, quality service, fair financing and insurance practices, and efficient registration processes. Goyal announced that with automobiles becoming more affordable, the benefits of GST reductions would be passed on to consumers from September 22. He underscored the importance of after-sales service, availability of spare parts, and continued support for buyers, even if companies discontinue models or exit the Indian market. Recalling past instances where firms wound up operations, leaving customers stranded, he proposed a framework requiring companies to maintain a local presence and after-sales support for a defined period before winding down. Such measures, he said, would safeguard consumer interests and reinforce sector credibility. Highlighting Indias appeal as a large and growing market, Goyal noted that the country is negotiating Free Trade Agreements with several developed nations and attracting significant global investment. He stressed that fair competition is essential, as it drives efficiency, product quality, and consumer choice. He added that domestic manufacturing would benefit as global companies test products in India and scale investments, strengthening supply chains and resilience while ensuring local industry remains protected. The Minister invited stakeholders to submit suggestions at central, state, and local levels, including proposals to ease compliance burdens, simplify laws such as the Motor Vehicles Act, and decriminalise minor offences. He assured the industry that such recommendations would be reviewed and pursued with relevant authorities to create a more supportive business environment. Goyal reiterated the governments commitment to expanding the automobile sector, generating employment, and broadening consumer choice through greater market access. He noted that upcoming trade agreements are likely to bring more international brands and models to India, but emphasised that ensuring customer satisfaction ultimately rests with manufacturers and dealers through quality products, services, and after-sales care.
