ENA Economy 2025-11-27 17:08:31 Mumbai, Nov 27 (KNN) Punes public transport network is set for an expansion, with the Union Cabinet approving two new corridors—Line 4 (Kharadi Hadapsar Swargate Khadakwasla) and Line 4A (Nal Stop Warje Manik Baug)—under Phase 2 of the Pune Metro Rail Project. The announcement follows the recent sanction of Line 2A and Line 2B, marking the second major approval under the phase. Together, Line 4 and 4A will span 31.636 km and include 28 elevated stations, linking key IT hubs, commercial areas, educational institutions and residential neighbourhoods across East, South and West Pune. With the approval of Line 4 and 4A, the Pune Metro network will surpass the 100-km mark—an important milestone in the citys transition toward an integrated, modern and expanded rapid transit system. The project, estimated at Rs 9,857.85 crore, will be completed in five years and funded jointly by the Central Government, the Maharashtra Government and external bilateral and multilateral agencies. The corridors form an integral part of Punes Comprehensive Mobility Plan and will integrate with existing and sanctioned metro routes at Kharadi Bypass and Nal Stop (Line 2), and Swargate (Line 1). They will also offer interchange connectivity at Hadapsar Railway Station and link with planned extensions toward Loni Kalbhor and Saswad Road, strengthening multimodal access across metro, rail and bus systems. Running through key arterial routes—including Solapur Road, Magarpatta Road, Sinhagad Road, Karve Road and the Mumbai Bengaluru Highway—the new lines are expected to ease congestion along Punes busiest stretches while advancing safer, cleaner and more sustainable urban mobility. The corridors will connect diverse zones such as Kharadi IT Park, Hadapsars industrial belt, city-centre hubs and residential clusters in Warje and Khadakwasla. Ridership on both lines is projected to reach 4.09 lakh passengers daily by 2028, rising to nearly 7 lakh in 2038, 9.63 lakh in 2048 and more than 11.7 lakh by 2058. Of this, the Kharadi Khadakwasla corridor is expected to account for 3.23 lakh passengers in 2028, increasing to 9.33 lakh by 2058, while the Nal Stop Warje Manik Baug spur is projected to grow from 85,555 to 2.41 lakh passengers over the same period. Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro) will implement the project, covering all civil, electrical, mechanical and systems works.
