New Approval Framework To Reduce Coal Exploration Timelines By Three Months: Ministry Of Coal

ENA Sectors 2025-12-02 17:22:17 New Delhi, Dec 2 (KNN) The Ministry of Coal has introduced a streamlined approval mechanism for exploration programs and Geological Reports (GRs) for coal and lignite blocks, aiming to accelerate exploration activities and strengthen Indias energy preparedness. The reform responds to rising national energy needs and seeks to improve the efficiency, transparency, and technological strength of the countrys exploration ecosystem. Under the revised framework, exploration programs and GRs prepared by Notified Accredited Prospecting Agencies (APAs) accredited by National Accreditation Board for Education and Training (NABET), Quality Council of India (QCI), QCI-NABET and peer-reviewed by another accredited APA will no longer require clearance from the committee established by the Ministry in January 2022. The Ministry has published the new methodology on its official website. The updated process is expected to reduce approval timelines by at least three months, enabling faster operationalisation of coal blocks and supporting allottees in meeting key milestones. Officials note that the move strengthens ease of doing business and reflects the Governments growing confidence in the technological capabilities and operational efficiency of private prospecting agencies. By expanding the role of accredited private agencies and reducing procedural bottlenecks, the reform aims to accelerate exploration, uphold high technical standards, and support the sustainable development of coal and lignite resources.
