New Delhi, Jan 1 (KNN) The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has announced the discontinuation of the Know Your Vehicle (KYV) process for cars under the Car/Jeep/Van category for all new FASTag issuances, effective from 1 February 2026.

The decision is aimed at improving public convenience and addressing issues faced by highway users due to post-activation verification requirements.

According to NHAI, the move is expected to provide relief to a large number of road users who had experienced delays and repeated follow-ups after FASTag activation, despite submitting valid vehicle documents at the time of issuance.

For existing FASTags issued to cars, KYV will no longer be required as a routine measure. The process will be undertaken only in specific cases where complaints are received, including instances of incorrect issuance, misuse, or issues such as loose FASTags. In the absence of any such complaints, existing car FASTags will not be subject to KYV.

To maintain system integrity and compliance while simplifying procedures for users, NHAI has strengthened pre-activation validation norms for issuer banks.

Under the revised framework, FASTag activation will be permitted only after mandatory validation of vehicle details through the VAHAN database. The provision for post-activation validation has been withdrawn, and RC-based verification will be allowed only in exceptional cases where vehicle details are unavailable on VAHAN, with banks held fully accountable.

FASTags issued through online channels will also be activated only after completion of the required validation process.

NHAI stated that these measures shift the responsibility for vehicle verification entirely to issuer banks prior to activation, thereby eliminating the need for post-issuance checks.

The reforms are intended to make the FASTag system more user-friendly, transparent and technology-driven, while reducing grievances and strengthening compliance across the ecosystem.

(KNN Bureau)
